Luxury Hotels in Istanbul, Turkey

Istanbul has a good selection of international-chain hotels and a few fine local hotels for you to consider. Here's the list.
Virtually all hotels in this 5-star category have the usual deluxe facilities: comfortable guest rooms with one or two double, queen or king-size beds, luxury bathrooms, mini-bar, satellite TV and broadband Internet connection.
Public areas always include several restaurants and bars, health club/exercise room, shops, and meeting and/or convention facilities.
Many (but not all) of Istanbul's deluxe hotels have swimming pools, as well as that ultimate local status symbol: rooms with views of the Bosphorus. If they don't have these desirable features, I mention the lack in my description of the hotel.
Location is an important consideration.
If you stay in Sultanahmet, you'll be only steps from Istanbul's major sights, including Ayasofya, the Hippodrome, and Topkapi Palace, but you may not get a swimming pool or Bosphorus views.
If you stay in Beyoglu, especially Taksim Square, you're close to shopping and nightlife, and only a 15-minute taxi ride from Sultanahmet. Your hotel will probably offer a swimming pool and Bosphorus views.
If you stay on the Bosphorus shore, you may have both these features, but there may be few shops or attractions near your hotel and you'll probably spend an hour or more each day getting around by taxi.

1- & 2-Star Hotels, Istanbul, Turkey

Istanbul's good, cheap budget hotels include low-cost pensions as well.
The 1- and 2-star hotels tend to follow standard hotel format, with expected services: 2-person rooms with private shower and toilet for a budget price. But there are exceptions.
Hostels and pensions, by contrast, usually have a variety of accommodations from double-rooms-with-shower through multi-bed dorm rooms sharing common facilities to space on the roof where you roll out your sleeping bag.
There are no cheap hotels near Taksim Square. Your best bet to find a simple, clean, convenient small hotel is in Sultanahmet:

Best 3-Star Hotels in Istanbul

Istanbul's good three-star hotels are the thrifty traveler's choice.
For YTL75 to YTL175 you get a comfortable two-person guest room with private bathroom, nice decor, and sometimes even such 4-star services as minibars or refrigerators, satellite TVs, wireless (Wifi) Internet connections, and air conditioning.
You can't depend on there being many other services (elevator/lift, restaurant)—but there may be.
Look for 3-star hotels in Sultanahmet, although there are some in other parts of the city as well. My favorites:

First-Class Hotels in Taksim Square

Taksim Square and Istiklal Caddesi are where Istanbullus come to stroll, shop, drink, dine, have fun, see and be seen.
The largest number of Beyoglu 4-Stars is in the grid of streets just northwest of Taksim Square.
This is perfect! You're in a neighborhood of relatively quiet streets (little through traffic), but you're less than 5 minutes' stroll from the busy square, its Metro station, buses (including the Havas airport bus), taxis, and the northeastern end of Istiklal Caddesi, Istanbul's premier shopping-and-strolling avenue.
You're also within walking distance of the Istanbul Hilton, the Hyatt Regency, Ceylan InterContinental, The Marmara, Divan Oteli and Ritz-Carlton 5-Star luxury hotels (5-10 minutes) not to mention Dolmabahçe Palace (20 minutes) and the Military Museum (15 minutes).

4-Star Hotels in Istanbul, Turkey

Istanbul's first-class (4-star) hotels offer excellent comfort and convenience at moderate rates, whether in Sultanahmet, Hocapasa or Beyoglu (Taksim Square or Tepebasi).
Consider a 4-Star if you...
—Enjoy modern comforts in rooms of quite adequate size.
—Can afford rates of about YTL150 to YTL300 double, breakfast included.
—Don't need luxury services such as large meeting rooms, swimming pools, shopping arcades, and a variety of in-hotel restaurants.
Most of Istanbul's 4-Stars are modern (built in the last 15 years or less) and many are conveniently located near tourist attractions and main squares.
For your convenience, I've included in this group some hotels classed as "Special" by the Turkish Ministry of Tourism, often Ottoman-style inns that have most—but not all—of the comforts and conveniences required to be officially classed as 4-Star.

Beyoglu and Taksim have lots of restaurants, shops, cafes, airline offices, nightclubs, and the Atatürk Cultural Center (opera, ballet, concerts, drama, conventions) and the main pedestrian-only avenue of Istiklal Caddesi. The Taksim area also has most of Istanbul's 5-Star luxury hotels, so you'll be in nearly the same location as the Hilton and Hyatt, but at half or a third of the price.

Special Hotels in Istanbul, Turkey

Istanbul's Special-Class hotels offer character, specifically Ottoman character. Some were built during the Ottoman Empire, others have been restored to the character of that era, still others strive for an Ottoman ambience.
Recognizing that some unique hotels did not fit its standard star classification system, Turkey's Ministry of Culture and Tourism created 'S' (Special) Class to designate hotels and inns that may not meet all the technical requirements for a certain star rating, such as number of guest rooms or restaurant seats, but that had other advantages, such as character, historical interest, and/or charm.
Special Class hotels are smaller than the standard 4- and 5-star luxury hotels, with fewer staff whom you'll get to know more easily. Each has special charms or advantages. Most are as comfortable as any modern hotel rating three or four stars.

Istanbul's Atatürk International Airport has a hotel right in the International Terminal, and several others within 4 to 8 km (15 to 20 minutes by taxi, YTL10 to YTL16).

Depending upon when you fly, an airport hotel may or may not save you time and money. If you must travel to the airport during the morning or afternoon-evening rush hours, an airport hotel may make sense. But if you will be going to the airport at night or early in the morning, you might as well stay in the city. A taxi from Sultanahmet can reach the airport in 35 minutes between 9 pm and 7 am, 45 minutes to an hour at most other times. The tram and Light-rail Metro will take you from Sultanahmet to your airport terminal in about an hour.
Plan to be at the airport an hour before a domestic flight, and two hours before an international flight, to get through security, check-in, and a second security check.

Istanbul International Airport HotelThe airport hotel, right in the International Terminal, has 85 rooms, restaurants, bars, and business facilities.
The 51 "airside" rooms are within the airport's security area and thus open only to international passengers arriving, departing, or in transit. The airside rooms can be rented for an hour or two, two to four hours, four to six hours, six to nine hours, or overnight, depending on your needs: perfect for taking a nap, a shower, or a few hours' work time.

Ciragan Palace Kempinski Istanbul, modern, next to a rebuilt Ottoman palace right on the Bosphorus shore: half the rooms have good views, all are surprisingly expensive.
Radisson SAS Bosphorus Hotel, in trendy Ortaköy, within walking distance of the famous Ortaköy Mosque and nearby tea houses, it's out of the center, but in a good location nonetheless.
Conrad International Istanbul, good Bosphorus views from most rooms, but you must take taxis everywhere.
Swissotel The Bosphorus, fine Bosphorus views, but little within walking distance.
Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at the Bosphorus, the Bosphorus shore branch of the international luxury chain.

Beyoglu & Taksim Hotels, Istanbul

North of the Golden Horn, Beyoglu has fewer major sights than Sultanahmet in Old Istanbul south of the Golden Horn; but Beyoglu has more upscale boutiques, fine restaurants and trendy cafes and bars.

Istanbul Hilton, the city's first deluxe hotel, with panoramic views and spacious gardens and grounds
Hyatt Regency Istanbul, richly designed and decorated, and well located
Divan Oteli, smaller, locally-run, with a longstanding reputation for superb personal service
Ceylan Inter-Continental, asymmetrical sykscraper, totally modern, in a good location with excellent views all around
The Marmara, high-rise right in Taksim Square, always bustling, good views
Pera Palas Oteli, built for Orient Express passengers in late 1800s, dripping with nostalgia but a bit under-luxurious and over-priced.
Büyük Londra Oteli (Grand Hotel de Londres), the other of Istanbul's remaining late-19th-century hotels, is more modest than the Pera Palas, but very near, and a lot less expensive. See 3- & 4-Star Hotels in Tepebasi.

Grand Bazaar (Kapali Çarsi), Istanbul

Istanbul's Grand Bazaar (Kapali Çarsi, or Covered Market) is Turkey's largest covered market offering excellent shopping: beautiful Turkish carpets, glazed tiles and pottery, copper and brassware, apparel made of leather, cotton and wool, meerschaum pipes, alabaster bookends and ashtrays, and all sorts of other things.
Most guidebooks claim that it has 4000 shops. Because of consolidation and replacement of shops by restaurants and other services the number is certainly lower, but you get the idea: it has lots of shops. Not all of them, by the way, are for tourists; locals shop here as well, lending a welcome dose of authenticity.
A dozen restaurants in the bazaar allow you to have lunch in the midst of your shopping. Note that the bazaar is closed entirely on Sunday, as is the Egyptian (Spice) Market.
You'll want to hone your bargaining skills before you plunge into the markets. Tips...
Beware of pickpockets and bag-slashers in the crowds.
Divan Yolu, the avenue from Sultanahmet to Beyazit Square (the large plaza next to the Grand Bazaar) offers many interesting sights so the walk is a pleasant one.
However, the easiest way to get from Sultanahmet to the Kapali Carsi (and vice-versa) is via the Zeytinburnu tram uphill from Sultanahmet; get out at the Çarsikapi stop.
By the way, going by taxi is not so great (and certainly not cheap) because your taxi must negotiate a tortuous route around one-way streets, pedestrian-only and tramcar-only areas.

Beyazit Meydani (Square), Istanbul

Beyazit Square (officially named Hürriyet Meydani, "Freedom Square," but no one uses that name except some cartographers) is the spacious plaza in front of Istanbul University's main gate, and next to the Grand Bazaar and the Old Book Bazaar (Sahaflar Çarsisi).
Though the Romans called it the Forum Tauri, the Byzantines expanded it and renamed it the Forum of Theodosius. It's now the stone-paved stage for the dramatic backdrop of the university gates.
The walled Istanbul University campus was built as the Ottoman Ministry of War, which accounts for its martial, fortress-like aspect.
The Mosque of Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent (Süleymaniye Camii), Istanbul's largest, is just behind the university enclosure.
The area just east of the square is known as Çarsikapi (CHAHR-shuh-kah-puh, "Door to the Market") because of a main entrance to the Grand Bazaar.

At Çarsikapi you can catch the Eminönü/Kabatas tram eastward for Sultanahmet, Sirkeci Station and Eminönü (Egyptian Market, Galata Bridge).
A great way to explore Istanbul's markets is to take a walking tour from Beyazit and the Grand Bazaar north along Uzunçarsi Caddesi ("Longmarket Street") through the Tahtakale market district to the Rüstem Pasha Mosque and the Egyptian (Spice) Bazaar on the Golden Horn.
Going west, you catch the Zeytinburnu-Kabatas tram at either the Çarsikapi or Universite stops for Aksaray, Millet Caddesi, Topkapi gate and Zeytinburnu, where you can transfer to the Metro.

Golden Horn, Istanbul, Turkey

As the sun sets in Istanbul, its yellow light blazes on the waters of the Golden Horn, giving this freshwater estuary its romantic name.
"Golden Horn" is its Western name. Its Turkish name, Haliç, (hah-LEECH, from Arabic) has nothing to do with gold or horns. Haliç, short for Haliç-i Dersaadet, means "The Bay of Istanbul," the body of water which separates the "old" and "new" parts of European Istanbul.
The Galata Bridge crosses the Golden Horn at its mouth, connecting Eminönü and Sirkeci in Old Istanbul (centered on Sultanahmet) to the south with Karaköy (Galata) and Beyoglu (Pera) to the north.
This short river may have gotten its "golden" name because it was the commercial heart of the city, serving as the principal harbor of Byzantium, Constantinople and Istanbul for 2000 years, until the mid-20th century. Markets still abound here, and the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce has its offices right on the shore.

In Byzantine times, Italian city-states had colonies on its shores, and the southern end of the Galata Bridge at Eminönü was a Karaite Jewish quarter. In later times, Rüstem Pasha, grand vezir to Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent, built his exquisite small mosque here.
In Ottoman times, Sephardic Jews fleeing the persecutions of the Spanish Inquisition were welcomed into the empire and settled at Balat and Hasköy on the Golden Horn. (For more, see Jewish Sites in Turkey.)
In late Ottoman times, the Orient Express from Paris would round Seraglio Point and come to a stop at Sirkeci Station beneath the walls of Topkapi Palace at the mouth of the Golden Horn.
European trains to Istanbul still arrive at Sirkeci, and international cruise ships and ferries still arrive at the Yolcu Salonu in Karaköy (Galata) to the north across the mouth of the Golden Horn.

Sirkeci Hotels, Istanbul, Turkey

Between Sultanahmet (the center of Old Istanbul) and Sirkeci Railway Station is the Sirkeci district, a neighborhood with two dozen hotels, at least a dozen restaurants, even a Turkish bath.

In Sirkeci you may pay 20% to 35% less for a comfortable hotel room than in Sultanahmet, yet Sirkeci is only a 10-minute walk downhill from Sultanahmet, the Hippodrome, Blue Mosque, Ayasofya and even less far from Istanbul's Gülhane Parki, Archeological Museums and Topkapi Palace. You can shorten the walk to and from Sultanahmet by taking the tram.
Most hotels here are newly-built or -restored. Many have some Ottoman-style decor, some have restaurants and/or bars, a few have views from a few rooms.
Many host tour groups from Europe and the United Kingdom, but all prefer individual travelers, couples and families.
All in all, this is the best-value area near Sultanahmet.
3-Star HotelsHere's a selection of adequately comfortable but inexpensive hotels rated at 3-stars or fewer.
4-Star HotelsHere are Sirkeci's better hotels, rated as 4-star or Special Class, with all the comforts, at prices significantly lower than comparable hotels in Sultanahmet.
Sirkeci & Hocapasa RestaurantsThere are some quite nice restaurants in and right next to some of these hotels, and many more clustered near the Hocapasa Camii (mosque) just two or three blocks from the hotels.
The Hocapasa restaurants are great bargains, patronized mostly by locals, but being discovered by foreign travelers as well.

Byzantine Hippodrome, Istanbul

Istanbul's Byzantine Hippodrome was the heart of Constantinople's political and sporting life, and the scene of games and riots through 500 years of Ottoman history as well.
It's now a calm city park called the At Meydani (Horse Grounds) because of its function in Ottoman times.
Facing one another across the Hippodrome are the Blue Mosque and the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Art.
Monuments decorating the Hippodrome include the 3500-year-old Egyptian Obelisk of Theodosius, brought to Constantinople by Emperor Theodosius in 390 AD.
You'll also see the spiral bronze base of a three-headed serpent sculpture brought from Delphi in Greece, under restoration in 2007.
During a visit in 1901, Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany erected an elaborate temple-like fountain as a gift to the sultan and his people.
Yerebatan Saray, the Sunken Palace Cistern, is beneath the little park at the northern end of the Hippodrome. Above the hidden cistern is a stone tower that was once part of the city's system of aqueducts.
Beside the stone tower is the Milion, the zero-mile-marker on the road called the Mese, the Roman road between Constantinope and Rome. The street is now called Divan Yolu.
Ayasofya (Hagia Sophia) is across the street from the stone tower, Topkapi Palace is just beyond Ayasofya, and the Istanbul Archeological Museums are next to Topkapi, down the hill bordering Gülhane Parki.

Ahirkapi/ÇatladikapiAt the far eastern/southern extent of Cankurtaran right by the Byzantine city walls and the shore highway, this district has several good hotels with virtues that make the extra few minutes' walk (8 to 12 minutes uphill to the Hippodrome) worth it.
Küçük AyasofyaOn and off Küçük Ayasofya Caddesi, the street running downhill from the Blue Mosque's Arasta Bazaar to the Little Hagia Sophia Mosque, and neighboring Nakilbent Sokak, there are a dozen hotels in all classes, all convenient to the Hippodrome.
BinbirdirekJust west of the Hippodrome up the hill is a small park beneath which lies Binbirdirek, the Byzantine Cistern of 1001 Columns. Facing the park and on neighboring Klodfarer Caddesi are several good hotels, some with fine views and moderate prices.
Piyer Loti Caddesi West of Binbirdirek, south of Divan Yolu, Piyer Loti Caddesi is a partly-pedestrianized street, therefore fairly quiet, and lined with good 3- and 4-star hotels.
KadirgaSouth and west of Binbirdirek and Piyer Loti, this neighborhood has a variety of lodgings on narrow streets in a real Istanbul-Turkish (not tourist) neighborhood. It's a 10- or 15-minute walk uphill to the Hippodrome.
BeyazitFarther west, south of Beyazit Square near the Grand Bazaar, are several good modern quiet hotels near shopping and the tram line, with lower prices, and still only a 12- to 15-minute walk from the Hippodrome along historic Divan Yolu.
